It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year....

Time to start planning school!!! Excuse the mess on the shelf, I don't have it perfectly organized yet, but that's part of the fun! I know for sure that this year we will be doing alot of mooreheadacadmey.org and schoolofabraham.com and then our own eclectic mix of goodies I've found on ebay or yard sales etc. It's gonna be the best school year yet, I can feel it!!!! Anyone else beginning to plan?? :)

Time for School!

We started a little refresher course to get us ready for homeschooling this year. We meet at the table for about an hour and do the "beginning time" stuff, like prayer, scriptures, family rules, etc. the fun stuff, and then we have been reviewing our numbers and letters and beginning cursive. We will be starting full time when the public school kids start. We are just so excited. We had a family meeting talking about the things we want to learn along with the things we need to learn. Everyone had great ideas. Another reason I love homeschooling! We get to do what we want! Along with doing the things we are required to learn of course!
So here's to another awesome school year!

Halfway Done!!

I cannot even believe that we are halfway done with school for the year!!! It's exciting! My babies are growing up so quickly :( makes me sad!
Yesterday was our first day back from our month long break. We always take december off school to concentrate on service and the gospel. So yesterday we had a great day of school.. the kids got alot of work done and we had a good time doing it. Today is a bit slower... due to me not feeling 100% but it is still great. We are doing alot of reading today and regular work. I also completed my book on lds homeschooling! I had so many awesome mommas contribute! The link to the book is on the sidebar... it is called ' Parents teach your children! a book on lds homeschooling'
Im excited about it! You can download it for just a few bucks!
Im getting some things done finally with the new year starting... the book, starting school again, and getting the penpal packages sent out in two weeks. It has taken me along time to get everything together for that. So many more good things to come this year I hope. We desperately need a good year. So much death, so much illness and financial hardships for our little family. But we are strong and hopefully we will enjoy a good year.
Happy New Years everyone!
;) Love, JL

Reading

I am so proud of my kids. I just have to post this!!! Dylan has read all of the Fudge books by Judy Blume ( I LOVED these books when i was his age, lol) and my Marlee girl, who is autistic and learning disabled, has all the sudden caught on to reading!! She is now reading, with help, Little House in Brookfield, the book about laura ingalls wilders mom caroline. I am soooo proud i could just bust! I love reading so much, it is something i have always wanted to instill into my children. I have read to them since they were born, they see me reading, and they are now all reading ( sort of with Sydney, she is really getting good at certain words and sounding things out, but hasnt read her first book yet ;)
I just love the feeling of laying on my bed with Dylan on one side reading to himself, with syd laying on my belly practically and marlee on the other side reading out loud to me and syd. What a beautiful thing!!!!!
Reading is the best!!!!!!
Yay for my kids!! ;)

Blessings

Today is monday and I generally really love monday. It is a fresh new start to a new week. I have rested up over the weekend and feel prepared to meet the new week. Well, with having pnuemonia and a broken rib, Ive been a little worried about how I will do everything i need to do this week. I have been praying hard and spent a long time in prayer last night pleading with Heavenly Father to help me be able to care for my husband and kids this week. I woke up this morning and have coughed maybe twice the whole day, and my rib doesnt hurt!!! What an amazing miracle and blessing. I know that Heavenly Father wants me to do a good job at being a momma and wife. I know that he wants me to be healthy enough to serve others as well. I am going to try harder to eat better and take better care of myself. I am just so thankful that so far today ( it is only 11:30am) I have been able to do dishes, and a ton of schoolwork with the kids. I swept the living room. I made lunch. I am so blessed to have been able to accomplish these things. This afternoon we still have an art project to do ( a cute fall leaf suncatcher thing) and literature ( we are starting on aesops fables) and i also want to try and get one load of laundry in the wash. I am not sure what will be for dinner tonight. I may have to let Keith take that , so that I dont completely wear myself out and be down tomorrow. The kids are being wonderful, they have been excellent for school and very creative today- they entertained themselves with a package of pipe cleaners for like an hour!! lol. They are so cute.
For gospel lesson today we read about Helamans Army. Tonight for fhe we are doing a helamans army boot camp. We will do different "boot camp" activities that have to do with being like the stripling warriors and obeying your parents and honoring them. It should be super fun!
Well, thats it for now. Im off to take the kids outside to choose the fall leaves they are going to use for their sun catchers :)

Hanny the Handkerchief Doll!

For school today we had a beautiful lesson on easter, we have been doing this all week, and today we spoke about the last supper and the atonement and judas betraying christ. We used pictures from the GAK and it really was a beautiful , spiritual lesson. I have been so impressed with my children this year on how much they have grasped and how touching the lessons have been. My kids rock! lol.

Then we did our handiwork, which has to do with Charlotte Mason Homeschooling Method. We worked on a cute handkerchief doll kit that we purchased at the Lincoln Fair in quincy. Each of the kids got to sew and they were so proud of it, and it turned out adorable! She now holds a prominent spot in our home, she's special because she represents a fun afternoon at the fair, a fun lesson on abraham lincoln and that time period, and the hard work of the kids working together and making her! It has been a good day so far and we are blessed!

Sunday Evening

It is always nice to sit quietly on a sunday evening and think about the week ahead. We have a busy week ahead, which is fine, I am thankful to have these things going on in my life. We have zoo day next saturday, we are about done with everything, im so excited. Tomorrow we are going out to lunch with family, which will be great fun. I have a home I love that needs to be tended too, and three beautiful babies who need care and sunshine and school! I sat down this afternoon to look over their schoolwork for the week. They are doing so well, and I really like our schedule. We school year round, and do about an hour a day. It really works out well! We get to play and do the things we need to do and have a great schedule where my kids know that this is the time we sit down for school. Im trying so hard to teach them things they need to know, not just reading, riting, rithmatic, lol, but also real world things, spiritual things, etc. We do little keepers of the home and little contenders of the faith, dylan will be starting cub scouts in august, they all want to do 4h soon, and in the fall we will be joining up with some st louis lds homeschool groups, and traveling down there a couple times a month for activities. All great things. Now, we have to have a huge yard sale in the next few weeks so I can afford to buy there new school books! They are pretty much done for the year, so I am excited to be choosing their new curriculum and working on it. Basically it is really nice to quietly sit here at my computer and think of a happy new week, hopefully full of sunshine. We have alot of stress in our family, lots of drama with disabilities, etc, but I love them! I "heart" my family!!!!

LDS Zoo Day

It is a week from tomorrow! I can't believe it is so close!! I am so excited! I have almost everything done, just need to finish the kid goody bags and I have two or three more things that are coming in mail this week to put in big goody bags. Then to find a way to get all of it, including humongous rainbow resources catalogs and all the prizes, to the tables by the sea lions. Any good ideas?? A wagon isnt big enough, and I thought about borrowing my in laws produce wagon thing, but im not sure it will fit in my van! Keith said, we will strap it to the top! But for that long of a ride??? Anyway, it is going to be absolutely fun!!! Cant wait to make new friends!
Drop me an email if you want to come!!!

Dinosaurs

Dylan chose some books about dinosaurs at the library this past week. We have been entranced by them!! Now we want to know EVERYTHING about dinosaurs. So we have been looking up online some neat dinosaur unit studies, we are planning another trip to the library and we have been watching these neat documentaries on youtube. We just watched this one about how the dinosaurs became extinct. It fascinates me to watch Dylans brain soak in all the details of the rocks, the biology, the different layers of sediment, what the meteorites caused, etc all these different miniscule details, he just soaks up and tries it all out in his brain, then comes up with his own theories. He is such a cool kid! I am loving watching him learn, and also loving learn too!
The girls are watching sesame street right now, oh i love that show. I grew up on the street ! LOL.
Feeling better today, just very tired still. Trying to continue to take it easy. I did the dishes, put some laundry in, and Ive been reading to the kids and helping them with their studies, etc. It is only 9 am. A very long day to go. I hope I will make it!!!! Keith just called to tell me that he hurt himself at work again, this is becoming an every day thing, and that they may have to work all night to finish this project for the hospital. Apparently they are only giving them from 3 pm until 5 am to finish this huuuuge amount of work. So we will see what happens there, whether we will even see him tonight. I am proud of him for his job, he enjoys it, and it is important to him, and I feel bad that he stayed home with me on tuesday, so I wont complain if he works overnight! but i hope he will feel good about it, and not get sick or something. We'll see how it goes. He's a good guy!
I have been trying to exercise, but with being so sick, I have slacked off. I did lose some weight while sick, but come on, that doesnt count, lol!!!! Today Im going to try and just do some minor walking and stretching, to try and get my body to feel better. I am going to continue to rest alot today also, hoping that my body will get back to where it needs to be, so I can take the world by storm!!!!!!!

Wierd New Law-- could mean the end of all used kid items!!!!!

Ok, this absolutely KILLS me, but this new law was passed and anyway, here is the article from the LA times, I am NOT happy about this.

la times:

Some owners say the cost of testing for toxic lead and phthalates will shut their businesses. The law goes into effect Feb. 10.
By Alana Semuels January 2, 2009
Barring a reprieve, regulations set to take effect next month could force thousands of clothing retailers and thrift stores to throw away trunkloads of children's clothing. The law, aimed at keeping lead-filled merchandise away from children, mandates that all products sold for those age 12 and younger -- including clothing -- be tested for lead and phthalates, which are chemicals used to make plastics more pliable. Those that haven't been tested will be considered hazardous, regardless of whether they actually contain lead.
"They'll all have to go to the landfill," said Adele Meyer, executive director of the National Assn. of Resale and Thrift Shops. The new regulations take effect Feb. 10 under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which was passed by Congress last year in response to widespread recalls of products that posed a threat to children, including toys made with lead or lead-based paint.Supporters say the measure is sorely needed. One health advocacy group said it found high levels of lead in dozens of products purchased around the country, including children's jewelry, backpacks and ponchos.
Lead can also be found in buttons or charms on clothing and on appliques that have been added to fabric, said Charles Margulis, communications director for the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland. A child in Minnesota died a few years ago after swallowing a lead charm on his sneaker, he said. But others say the measure was written too broadly. Among the most vocal critics to emerge in recent weeks are U.S.-based makers of handcrafted toys and handmade clothes, as well as thrift and consignment shops that sell children's clothing."We will have to lock our doors and file for bankruptcy," said Shauna Sloan, founder of Salt Lake City-based franchise Kid to Kid, which sells used children's clothing in 75 stores across the country and had planned to open a store in Santa Clara, Calif., this year. There is the possibility of a partial reprieve. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is responsible for enforcing the law, on Monday will consider exempting clothing and toys made of natural materials such as wool or wood. The commission does not have the authority to change the law but can decide how to interpret it.But exempting natural materials does not go far enough, said Stephen Lamar, executive vice president of the American Apparel and Footwear Assn. Clothes made of cotton but with dyes or non-cotton yarn, for example, might still have to be tested, as would clothes that are cotton-polyester blends, he said."The law introduces an extraordinarily large number of testing requirements for products for which everyone knows there's no lead," he said.Clothing and thrift trade groups say the law is flawed because it went through Congress too quickly. By deeming that any product not tested for lead content by Feb. 10 be considered hazardous waste, they contend, stores will have to tell customers that clothing they were allowed to sell Feb. 9 became banned overnight. These groups say the law should be changed so that it applies to products made after Feb. 10, not sold after that date. That would take action by Congress, however, because the Consumer Product Safety Commission's general counsel has already determined that the law applies retroactively, said commission spokesman Scott Wolfson. The regulations also apply to new clothing. That won't be a problem for large manufacturers and retailers, industry experts say, but it will be a headache for small operators such as Molly Orr, owner of Molly O Designs in Las Vegas.Orr has already produced her spring line of children's clothes. She says she can't afford the $50,000 it would cost to have a private lab test her clothing line, so she's trying to sell her inventory at a steep discount before Feb. 10. After that, she is preparing to close her business."We have a son with autism, so we are all about cleaning up the toxins that our children are exposed to," she said. "But I think the law needs to be looked at more closely to see how it is affecting the economy in general."Thrift store owners say the law stings because children's garments often come in new or nearly new, because children typically outgrow clothing quickly.Carol Vaporis, owner of Duck Duck Goose Consignment in New Port Richey, Fla., said her store stocks barely used brand-name clothing from places such as Limited Too and Gymboree."We really provide a service to the community to help people get clothes for their children they otherwise couldn't afford," she said.Families have been bringing more clothes to consignment stores, where they get a chunk of the proceeds, to earn a little cash this winter, she said. She plans to contact her congressional representatives and senators to ask them to amend the law but says there's not enough awareness about the repercussions of the law to force anything to change. Many retailers and thrift stores appear to be unaware that the law is changing. Of half a dozen Southern California children's thrift stores contacted by The Times, only one had heard of the law. Organizations such as Goodwill say they're still investigating how the law will affect them because there is so much confusion about what will be banned.Cynthia Broockman, who owns two consignment stores and a thrift shop in Virginia, recently stopped accepting children's products for resale. That raised the ire of a man who was trying to sell his son's castoffs there and had not heard of the new rules."I think it's not understood by people how sweeping and far-reaching this is," she said. "The ripples that are going to go forth from this are just astonishing."alana.semuels@latimes.com
